NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) — Joyce Randolph, the actor best known for her portrayal of Trixie Norton in the classic 1950s-era sitcom “The Honeymooners” died on Saturday at her home in New York. She was 99.
Her death was confirmed by her son, Randy Charles, to the new York Times.
A Detroit native, Randolph moved to New York City in 1943 to pursue a career in acting. She got her break after fellow future “Honeymooners” actor Jackie Gleason spotted her in a commercial and recruited her for the Dumont Television Network variety show “Calvacade of Stars.”
Randolph first portrayed Trixie, the character she would become known for, in skits on The Jackie Gleason Show before the official launch of The Honeymooners on CBS in 1955.
For the show, Randolph played Trixie as an outspoken conservative housewife, serving as a foil for her on-screen husband, Ed Norton, played by Art Carney.
After the completion of The Honeymooners, Randolph found herself typecast to the role, though she continued to find work on the stage, both on Broadway and in summer stock musicals.
Randolph married Richard Lincoln Charles, a wealthy marketing executive, on October 2, 1955, the day after The Honeymooners premiered and the couple remained married until Charles’ death in 1997.
At the time of her death, Randolph was the last surviving member of the Honeymooners cast, following the death of her on-screen husband Art Carney in 2003.
