LONDON (CelebrityAccess) — Sinead O’Connor, the noted Irish singer and activist, died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma, the New York Times reported.

O’Connor, who rose to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s on the strength of hits such as her ethereal cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” died in July 2023 at the age of 56.

Her passing came a year after the death of her 17-year-old son Shane, who was found dead after being reported missing.

“the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby, I love you so much. Please be at peace,” O’Connor tweeted following the discovery of her son’s body in the Irish coastal town, Bray.

At the time of her passing, an official cause of death was not disclosed with law enforcement officials at the time stating that the singer had died of natural causes and noting that her death was not being treated as suspicious.

According to the Times, O’Connor’s death certificate, which was registered last week, provided additional clarity on the circumstances of her passing, noting that the singer “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low-grade lower respiratory-tract infection.”
